Air 101

Learn about "air" and what to look for.

The Performance Matrix

Air Volume

Air volume and airflow are interchangeable terms used to describe an air purifier's output. Measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM), this metric determines the time required to clean a specific area and is directly influenced by the dimensions of the space.

Metric Air provides airflow metrics across all operating speeds, enabling buyers to accurately weigh airflow performance against noise levels—a crucial trade-off in air purifier selection.

This is not to be confused with Fan Speed or Free Flow rate, which is a measurement of CADR without any components such as filters inside the air purifier.

Sound Profile

Sound level is just as critical as air volume, and the two are intrinsically linked. If a purifier is too loud, it is often turned down or off, compromising its efficiency and ability to clean a space effectively.

We believe consumers should understand sound levels at every speed before purchasing. Metric Air is committed to transparency, providing third-party testing and real-world comparisons to ensure you can make a fully informed decision.

Filter Science

Five-Stage Multi-Barrier Protection

Metric Air purifiers eliminate coarse debris, ultrafine particulates, VOCs, and bio-aerosols through an advanced sequence: a nylon pre-filter, high-efficiency HEPA media, heavy-duty activated carbon, a germicidal UV-C lamp, and a revitalizing negative ion chamber.

Dedicated Stages vs. Hybrid Compromises

Unlike all-in-one hybrid filters that embed carbon directly into HEPA media, Metric Air purifiers isolate each stage. A standalone carbon canister holds significantly more adsorbent material to capture stubborn chemicals and odors without choking airflow or lowering particulate capture rates.

Maximized Filter Lifecycles & Zero Off-Gassing

Because carbon saturates at ~4,400 hours while HEPA media lasts up to 8,700 hours, hybrid filters force premature replacements to prevent saturated carbon from off-gassing chemicals back into the room. Independent components allow each filter to run its full lifecycle, slashing replacement costs and waste.

Lifecycle Value

Beyond Sticker Price: The True Cost of Clean Air

A low initial purchase price is often misleading. The real measure of an air purifier's value is what it costs to maintain target Air Changes per Hour (ACH). Metric Air purifiers deliver high airflow rates at whisper-quiet decibel levels, meaning you need fewer units running at usable speeds to achieve optimal air exchange compared to noisy retail alternatives.

Industrial Longevity vs. Motor Decay

Standard retail units rely on consumer-grade motors that degrade, hum, and lose efficiency after four to five years, forcing premature replacements. Metric Air purifiers are built around industrial-grade components engineered for a 12-year operational lifespan, maintaining consistent airflow and quiet performance year after year.

Lower 10-Year Total Cost of Ownership

By combining long-lasting motors, separate filter replacement cycles, and higher usable airflow, Metric Air significantly reduces the total cost of ownership. Over a 10-year span, the cost to maintain clean air in a commercial or clinical setting is often 40% to 60% lower than standard competitors—making superior engineering the smarter financial investment.
